Measurement setup makes your lead counts trustworthy. We decide which actions count as leads, configure GA4 and Google Ads to count them once, separate the different kinds of call signal, and, where your booking system allows, send booked jobs back to Google Ads. When we finish, the reports reconcile with your office call log.
In the Conv.ca sequence this sits inside research and implementation: it is the instrument every later step depends on. It is the usual starting point for CRO experiments and holdout testing.
Who it is for
Any HVAC or heating company that advertises and cannot answer "how many real leads did we get last month, and from where?" in under a minute. Common symptoms:
- Google Ads reports more conversions than the office remembers taking
- GA4 shows a channel producing leads that nobody can find in the CRM
- a past agency set up tracking and nobody knows what is counted
- the phone number on the site changes depending on the visitor, and sometimes it breaks
What is included
Lead definitions
We agree in writing what counts as a lead: connected calls over a set length, quote requests, and texts if you take them. Softer actions are tracked as diagnostics, not leads. GA4's key events are then set to match that definition and nothing more.
Call signals, kept apart
Google Ads documents calls from ads, calls to a forwarding number on your website, and taps on a number on a mobile site as separate measurements. We configure each one deliberately and never add taps to connected calls. The minimum call length, which Google's call conversion help leaves to you, is set from a sample of your own call durations.
Booked-job feedback
Where your CRM or booking system can store the Google click ID, we set up offline conversion imports so Google Ads learns from booked jobs, not just calls. Google's page notes that, from June 15, 2026, these uploads moved to the Data Manager API, which affects how automated integrations are built.
Settings that quietly matter
- GA4 data retention set to the longest option your property allows
- the reporting attribution model written down with its date
- conversion actions marked primary or secondary on purpose
A reconciliation sheet
A simple monthly sheet comparing Ads, GA4 and your office log, which your team can keep up after we hand over.
Texts, the Business Profile and other channels
Google forwarding numbers track calls, not texts. If you take texts, we give them their own logged line in the reconciliation sheet. Calls from your Google Business Profile are reported separately again, so the sheet shows each channel your phone leads arrive through, instead of folding them into one total that nobody can explain.
Timeline
Most work happens in three passes, with dates confirmed in your proposal:
- Audit. Read-only review of every tag, conversion action and number.
- Rebuild. Changes made in a planned window, outside your busiest weeks if possible.
- Verify. At least two full weeks of parallel counting against your call log before anyone relies on the new numbers.
How results are measured
The goal is accuracy, not bigger numbers. Success means:
- Ads, GA4 and office counts reconcile within a gap we can explain line by line
- every conversion action has a written definition
- your team can run the monthly reconciliation without us
Lead totals often go down after a cleanup. That is the point: you are seeing real leads for the first time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting number taps as calls. It inflates mobile performance and misleads bidding.
- A minimum call length nobody chose. Check it against real durations.
- Two systems swapping the same number. Decide which tool owns each page.
- Optimizing bids on calls when jobs are available. See our article on Google Ads experiments and offline conversions.
- Ignoring privacy. Enhanced conversions use hashed customer data; your privacy notice should say so. We set up measurement, not legal compliance, so get qualified advice if unsure.
For the reasoning behind these choices, read call tracking and attribution. For plans, see pricing, or call, text or email.
Frequently asked questions
We already have call tracking. Why would we need this?
Having tracking and having reconciled tracking are different things. Most accounts we review count some calls twice, miss others, or treat number taps as calls. We check every source against your own call log.
Will this change the number on our Google Business Profile?
We recommend keeping your real business number on your profile and in your site's visible text, so your details stay consistent across the web. Forwarding numbers are used where they help measurement without disturbing that.
Who owns the accounts afterwards?
You do. Analytics properties, ads accounts and tag containers stay in your company's name, and we work with access you grant and can remove.
